The conservation of urban flower visitors Down Under
نویسندگان
چکیده
The majority of the human population now lives in urban environments and that proportion is forecast to increase dramatically by 2050. As urbanization increases, environment will increasingly play a role biodiversity conservation. Floral visitors, often erroneously referred as pollinators, are integral maintenance ecosystem services function. Several floral visitors capable adapting environments, but for comprehensive protection, management practices must be tailored specific groups. Urban conservation usually discussed from northern hemisphere perspective, which has very different ecology than its southern counterpart. Here we compare contrast strategies flower Australia New Zealand hemisphere, with focus on birds bees. differences characteristics mean unique strategies, consider local evolutionary context integrate native flora, required support visitors. An additional important difference neither honey bees nor bumble bees, reach high densities many areas, region, thus should excluded schemes.

Developing a Conceptual Framework of Integrity in Urban Heritage Conservation
The concept of integrity, as a factor of sustaining values and significance of cultural heritage, is considered to be a key element in the process of urban heritage conservation. Review and analysis of documents, conventions and theories concerning the role of integrity in urban heritage conservation shows that in recent decades, the concept of integrity has attracted attention worldwide in the...
متن کاملBreeding system, flower visitors and seedling survival of two endangered species of Helianthemum (Cistaceae).
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Helianthemum marifolium and H. caput-felis are two endangered plant species of the western Mediterranean. Several aspects of the reproduction of both species were examined to determine whether their rarity could be related to factors causing reproductive limitation. METHODS The flowering and fruiting phenology of both species in two non-sympatric island populations (Mallor...
متن کاملResource partitioning among flower visitors and evolution of nectar concealment in multi-species communities.
The plant community within which flower evolution takes place has largely been ignored. We develop two models for the evolution of nectar concealment when flowers are visited by legitimate pollinators and flower parasites. When there is a single plant species, no level of nectar concealment is evolutionarily stable: any population can be invaded by mutants exhibiting a higher level of nectar co...
متن کاملDark, bitter-tasting nectar functions as a filter of flower visitors in a bird-pollinated plant.
Floral nectar is offered by plants to animals as a reward for pollination. While nectar is typically a clear liquid containing sugar and trace amounts of amino acids, colored nectar has evolved in several plant families. Here we explore the functional significance of the phenolic compounds that impart a dark brown color to the nectar of the South African succulent shrub Aloe vryheidensis. Flowe...
